Rotary’s District Leadership & Organization
Central Florida’s District 6980 is led by a District Governor and each Rotary Club has a President—all holding office for a duration of one year
The honor of being a Rotarian can only be enhanced by serving as a Board Member, Club Director or Club President—and later on by serving as a District Leader supporting a District Governor.
As a leadership development organization, Rotary depends on its members to take on the challenge of leading their local Rotary Clubs to continue the good work we do as Rotarians. With this in mind, you may wonder how Rotary works and here is a general explanation of our leadership’s hierarchy and organization.
For starters, Rotary Districts and Clubs operate in a Rotary Year period, starting on July 1st until June 30th of every year. Hence why you will see two years listed next to a District Governor or a Club President. Board Members and Directors at any level also serve for the same duration, although it is not uncommon to have a Treasurer serve for a 3-year period to ensure financial and accounting continuity.
These are the leadership roles of Rotary within a District:
- Rotary Districts are led by a District Governor, who is elected 3 years prior to their year of service, serving for one year
- Rotary Clubs are led by a Club President, who is elected to serve for one year
- Rotary Club Presidents direct a Board of Directors, who represent the membership and run the Club
- Rotary Club Committees support the leadership of the Club, further enhancing its capacity to do Service Above Self
Additional roles are often created to meet other areas of opportunity. Also, many Rotary Clubs have co-Chairs and committee delegates who work together to accomplish service projects, global grant programs or fundraising events, among many more.
